One person is dead and another seriously injured following an early-morning police chase in South Auckland.

At around 3:00 am on Thursday a Honda was observed by police doing a burnout on Mangere Rd, Mangere East.

The pursuit began after the driver failed to stop for police, according to Stuff.

Minutes later, the car collided with the South City Bakery at the intersection of Mangere and Walmsley roads.

Police say a male passenger in the car has died at the scene while the driver has been taken to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.

Investigations are underway by the Serious Crash Unit and the Independent Police Complaints Authority.

The road is closed with diversions in place, and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

Walmsley Rd is expected to remain closed until around lunchtime.
