Travel and commuting plans have been disrupted as a thick blanket of fog covered most of the North Island today, with Auckland the most affected.

MetService has blamed an abnormally warm Autumn, with record temperatures for April nationally, combining with cold fronts.

Whilst international flights were not affected, twelve domestic flights were delayed and seventeen domestic flights cancelled, as were ferry services out of Auckland.

Customers at the Devonport ferry service to Auckland faced delays of up to 40 minutes. The Auckland Harbour Bridge was also on high alert with traffic warnings issued by Auckland Transport.

The New Zealand Transport Agency thanked commuters for their patience and warned of further delays in days to come as MetService predicts further fog disruptions as they expect warm temperatures to stick around for a few more weeks.
